Cape Verde's surge meets Argentina's rescue in extra‑time clash

In a World Cup knockout tie, underdog Cape Verde forced three‑time champion Argentina into extra time, leaving the match deadlocked at 1‑1 after more than 100 minutes of play, including stoppage time. Lionel Messi had given Argentina the lead before halftime, while Deroy Duarte equalised just under the hour mark.

Messi's strike arrived in the first half, giving Argentina a 1‑0 advantage. The goal came before the break, establishing the initial lead.

Deroy Duarte responded for Cape Verde after just under an hour, leveling the score at 1‑1. His equaliser forced the match into extra time.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha delivered a dream performance, matching his earlier heroics against Spain in the group stage. Vozinha's saves kept his side in the game throughout the regular 90 minutes.

In extra time, Lisandro Martinez headed a corner into the roof of the net, restoring Argentina's lead. The goal came shortly after play resumed, putting pressure on Cape Verde to find another response.

Cape Verde now faces the challenge of finding a second breakthrough to stay alive. The outcome will hinge on whether the island nation can capitalize on any further set‑piece opportunities.
