Celtic urged to sign Uruguayan left-back Marcelo Saracchi

🇬🇧

Martin O’Neill signed a one-year permanent contract as Celtic manager on 5 June 2026, ending uncertainty at Parkhead. The 74-year-old guided Celtic to a domestic double after interim spells following Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy exits.

Celtic held interest in signing Marcelo Saracchi permanently, pending his acceptance of a backup role. Boca Juniors pursued a sale while his contract runs until December 2027. Saracchi made 27 appearances across competitions last season, including a decisive cameo in a title win over Hearts.

O’Neill told the Glasgow Times in February that Celtic should sign Saracchi permanently, stating he thought they “will” and “should” do it. His loan expires on 30 June 2026, leaving little time for the Hoops to act.

Saracchi is valued for his quality as a cover left-back who fits the system and knows the club. He is not a starter ahead of Kieran Tierney but offers reliability at an estimated €1.2 million fee. His career includes stints at River Plate, RB Leipzig, Galatasaray, Levante, and Boca Juniors.

Celtic face European football next season, demanding squad depth. Saracchi proved he could step in without performance drop, a rarity at this price. O’Neill’s backing removes ambiguity about the manager’s preference.

A €1.2 million fee for his profile and experience is straightforward business. The club’s hesitation remains the only obstacle, with O’Neill now permanent. Delaying further risks losing the opportunity.
