Club Brugge's double strategy: youth boost with PSG prospects

🇧🇪

Club Brugge is pursuing a dual transfer strategy that targets both its senior squad and its development pipeline. The latest move brings 18‑year‑old Paris Saint‑Germain U19 graduates left‑winger Elijah Ly and centre‑back Samba Coulibaly to the Belgian club on contracts running to 30 June 2030.

Belgian big clubs traditionally reinforce the first team while also injecting cash into the club’s finances. This season, they are equally obliged to refresh their U23 squads, which compete in the Challenger Pro League.

The Challenger Pro League will drop the youth‑team protection quota for the coming season. Consequently, sides such as Club NXT, RSCA Futures, Jong Genk and Jong Gent must strengthen to avoid slipping into amateur status.

Elijah Ly and Samba Coulibaly became free agents on 1 July and were announced on Thursday evening. Both 18‑year‑olds have signed until 30 June 2030 and will initially join Club Brugge’s U23 side, nicknamed the “Venice of the North”.

The duo spent the majority of their development at Paris Saint‑Germain before departing after failing to reach a contract extension. Ly operates as a left winger, while Coulibaly is a central defender, reflecting the positional needs of the Belgian side.

In the previous season’s Youth League, Elijah Ly recorded an assist and netted three goals. One of those goals came in the semi‑final against Real Madrid, highlighting his potential on the European stage.

Had they remained under contract, Paris Saint‑Germain might have loaned the prospects to AS Eupen. Instead, they joined Club Brugge as free players, a route also taken by Club NXT in recent signings.

The contrast between the senior‑team focus and the urgent U23 reinforcement underscores a shifting priority among Belgian clubs. As Club Brugge integrates the PSG talents, the upcoming season will test whether this dual approach sustains competitive depth.
