Corinthians icon Neto blasts Memphis deal as scandalous

Corinthians-icoon Neto expressed disbelief at the Memphis-nieuws Dit, calling the proposed €15 million two‑year contract scandalous, as the Dutch striker’s current deal expires in exactly one week and negotiations for an extension are under way. Neto, a 59‑year‑old former midfielder who played 95 matches for the club, told Rádio Craque Neto that such wages are unacceptable.

The contract of Memphis Depay with Corinthians expires in exactly one week. The club has offered the Oranje‑topscorer a two‑year deal worth almost €15 million, which includes €7.2 million in unpaid salary.

“If Corinthians wants to be Corinthians again, this must stop. It’s just scandalous,” said the 59‑year‑old former midfielder. He also highlighted the high wages of teammates Yuri Alberto, Vitinho and Pedro Raúl, suggesting the club is “playing with Corinthians, damn it.”

Neto, who played 95 matches for Corinthians, is regarded as a club icon. He featured for the side in two spells, 1989‑1993 and 1996‑1998, and won the Brazilian league title, the São Paulo state championship and the Brazilian Supercup during his tenure.

Memphis Depay has so far set the lucrative offer aside, leaving his future uncertain as he appears poised to depart the club.
