Darwin Nunez Near Liverpool Return as Free Transfer

🇬🇧

Darwin Nunez is close to rejoining Liverpool on a free transfer. The 26‑year‑old Uruguayan striker has indicated a desire to return to Anfield.

Richard Hughes sold Nunez to Saudi Arabian side Al‑Hilal last summer for an initial £46 million fee. Nunez reportedly earns £400 k per week at Al‑Hilal.

He began the Saudi Pro League season positively but was delisted from Al‑Hilal’s domestic squad in February when Karim Benzema was mentioned. Since the delisting he has seen little game time and is preparing for the FIFA World Cup under Marcelo Bielsa.

Liverpool, the outgoing Premier League champions, need a striker after Hugo Ekitike’s departure. Nunez’s pressing ability could suit a role under Andoni Iraola at Al‑Hilal next season.

Al‑Hilal appear ready to terminate Nunez’s contract, which would make him a free agent. Liverpool’s decision‑makers have been briefed on his availability and are weighing a contract offer.

Benfica, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Tottenham, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid have also shown interest. A move back to Europe would require Nunez to accept a lower salary than his current deal.

Liverpool hold an advantage as Nunez has signalled a preference for a Merseyside move.
