De Jong's 'lump in my stomach' underscores Dutch heartbreak

🇳🇱

Barcelona captain Frenkie de Jong took to Instagram today to voice his disappointment after the Netherlands’ World Cup exit, a 0‑0 draw with Morocco that ended in a penalty defeat. The Dutch midfielder described a lingering ‘lump in my stomach’ as the team’s hopes evaporated.

The tournament has already produced several early upsets, with Turkey and Uruguay eliminated in the group stage. Germany and the Netherlands were both knocked out in the Round of 32, amplifying the sense of embarrassment for nations with strong footballing cultures.

Against Morocco, the Dutch side failed to score in ninety minutes and ultimately lost the shoot‑out. The defeat was widely regarded as a shocking early exit for a country accustomed to deeper runs.

"Now, a few days after the game, the lump in my stomach and the disappointment is still the same," De Jong wrote. "It’s a huge honor and a great responsibility to play for the Dutch national team, and when we fall short the disappointment is extra big," he added.

He reflected that four years of waiting for another chance to win the world title feels like an eternity. De Jong promised that the squad will use the coming time to return stronger and meet the expectations of fans in future tournaments.

De Jong finished the season battling knee problems, having been injured in the matches against Sweden and Tunisia. Reports indicate he played those games while receiving pain‑killing injections.

Barcelona remain optimistic about his recovery, expecting him to return stronger and possibly join the club’s pre‑season preparations ahead of the new campaign. The club’s medical staff have expressed confidence in his rehabilitation progress.
