Derksen's bold coaching roadmap: Jans for two years, Bosz for five
While René van der Gijp hails Ronald Koeman’s tenure as a ‘great’ career, Johan Derksen argues the Dutch side needs a fresh direction after Koeman announced his immediate resignation on Tuesday evening. Derksen proposes a two‑year interim stint for Ron Jans before appointing Peter Bosz for a longer spell.
On Tuesday evening, 63‑year‑old Ronald Koeman confirmed he would step down as manager of the Netherlands national team with immediate effect. When asked how Koeman should view his career, René van der Gijp replied, “Great. He has had a great career as a player and coach, with great clubs.”
Derksen expressed no confidence in technical director Nigel de Jong, describing him as someone who would simply call Arne Slot, who could claim millions at European clubs, a scenario the KNVB could not match. He also dismissed Slot’s suitability for the national role.
Derksen suggested appointing Ron Jans as the interim head coach for two years, then installing Peter Bosz for a five‑year tenure as the permanent coach. He argued that Jans is the only Dutch candidate with the broad development experience needed for a short‑term assignment.
Derksen noted that Peter Bosz has already signed with PSV, yet he remains the dream candidate for the long‑term national job. He warned that the KNVB must avoid placing the wrong person in the role.
The former player also rejected Michael Reiziger as a possible national coach, calling the idea “absurd” because Reiziger has never led a team independently. Derksen added that, after observing women’s football, he believes one could never coach a men’s team.
