Driessen's dream: Guardiola as the Dutch coach exception

🇳🇱

On a quiet studio morning, journalist Valentijn Driessen painted his ideal picture for the Netherlands after Ronald Koeman’s exit: Pep Guardiola, the Spanish tactician fresh from a decade at Manchester City, as the lone foreign exception to a Dutch‑only policy for the Oranje.

Valentijn Driessen insists the national team should appoint a Dutch manager, but he makes a single exception. “We must simply go for a Dutchman, but there is an exception for that passport and that is Guardiola,” he said. He frames Guardiola as the only foreign passport that fits the role.

The last foreign coach of the Dutch side was Ernst Happel. The Austrian led the team from 1977 to 1978. Guardiola would therefore be the first non‑Dutch candidate in more than four decades.

Jeroen Kapteijns points out that Guardiola has publicly credited the Dutch football school. In a documentary, Guardiola said he is indebted to Johan Cruyff. Kapteijns argues that this admiration links his philosophy to the Dutch tradition.

Mike Verweij also voices support for Guardiola’s potential appointment. He notes that the job is not a full‑time commitment and could allow Guardiola to “repay Johan Cruyff and Dutch football.” Verweij adds that Guardiola’s style would suit the Oranje perfectly.

Driessen’s proposal underscores a broader debate on national identity versus tactical suitability. It arrives as the Dutch FA searches for a successor after Koeman’s departure. The discussion could shape the future direction of the Oranje.
