Dumfries demands respect from Greek journalists after noisy press conference

Denzel Dumfries, right-back of the Dutch national team, expressed great frustration after the match against Greece when he was confronted in the press area by noisy Greek journalists. He could barely hear Noa Vahle from SBS and felt compelled to intervene.

Conversation in Thessaloniki

In Thessaloniki the conversation between Dumfries and Vahle was difficult, because the noise hampered communication. The two had to repeat their words to understand each other.

Dumfries asked: “What did you say? It’s so noisy here…”, after which he addressed the Greek journalists with the appeal: “Hey, excuse me. My friend, show a little respect! We are in an interview.”

Vahle then asked whether the two goals of Dumfries had been rightly disallowed. Dumfries confirmed that the 2‑2 was a valid goal.

He explained that it was frustrating because he knew immediately on the pitch that it was a goal, but the referee refused it. According to him, the Greek defender Retsos had the control, after which he intercepted the ball and scored.

“I also told the referee that, but unfortunately the VAR thought otherwise,” Dumfries said. He concluded that they ultimately had one point, but that was not enough.

The Dutch right-back emphasized that there is still work to be done and that the team is preparing for the next match on Sunday.
