Dutch goalkeeper Bakker gets unexpected role before Ajax match
The Dutch Nordin Bakker, 28, unexpectedly steps in as the first goalkeeper for FC Midtjylland in the UEFA Conference League, after goalkeeper Elías Ólafsson underwent a kidney operation. His team will soon face Ajax in Denmark, a clash that is certainly attracting a lot of attention.
Bakker's unexpected rise
Bakker already made his debut this season in a cup match in which Midtjylland won 0-7 against a second‑division side. Due to the kidney injury of Elías Ólafsson, he is temporarily the first choice between the posts.
“I spoke to Elias after the match and I didn't expect him to be out for so long. Three days after the match I was on holiday in the Netherlands, and there I talked to him. He then told me how serious the injury was,” said Bakker (28).
He adds: “It's difficult for us. He is also my friend, but as the second goalkeeper it is now my job to replace him as well as possible.” Bakker believes that both goalkeepers are strong in the air during set‑piece situations and perform well on the goal line.

Outlook on the clash with Ajax
On 5 November Midtjylland will host Ajax in the Conference League and Bakker is very much looking forward to it. “I was back in the Netherlands last week, and my family and friends keep talking only about that match,” he says.
For Bakker this means a unique opportunity, but he emphasizes that his focus is first on the upcoming match against FC Copenhagen. He arrived last summer from SC Heerenveen, has previously played for Almere City and FC Volendam, and has kept a clean sheet sixteen times in 64 Eredivisie matches.
The situation shows how an unexpected injury can put a Dutch goalkeeper in the spotlight, while Ajax prepares for an important European confrontation.
