Unai Simón to Make History at 2026 World Cup
Goalkeeper Unai Simón is set to become the first Athletic player to feature in four major international tournaments at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament begins on Thursday 11 June with host Mexico facing South Africa, marking Simón's fourth senior championship with the Roja.
Simón previously appeared at the Qatar 2022 World Cup and at the Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 finals. Those three tournaments already place him among Spain's most experienced recent goalkeepers.
In addition to the finals, Simón has taken part in multiple UEFA Nations League campaigns, a competition created to replace low‑interest friendlies. His Nations League outings have added to his tally of senior caps.
His upcoming World Cup participation follows a season in which he guarded Athletic's goal in La Liga. The consistency of his club performances contributed to his continued selection by the national team.
Spain will rely on Simón's experience as they aim to progress beyond the group stage in the North American tournament. The goalkeeper's presence provides tactical stability for the Roja's defensive setup.
The opening match on 11 June will test Simón against Mexico's attack in the tournament's first game. A solid performance could set the tone for Spain's campaign.
