In the calm of a Tuesday morning, social media was filled with condolence messages after the announcement of the death of Courtney Meppen-Walter, a former player trained at Manchester City, at the age of thirty‑two.

A career marked by talent and tragedy

Meppen‑Walter, a native of Bury, north of Manchester, had left the club in 2013 after serving sixteen months in prison for a fatal road accident that occurred the previous year. The accident claimed the lives of a brother and a sister, aged thirty‑two and thirty‑seven respectively.

Captain of the English U18 teams, he wore the captain’s armband in several matches and was described as an “extraordinary figure with a huge heart” by Jon Gold, chairman of Nantwich, a club he also represented.

Reactions from clubs and the federation

Several of his former clubs, including Bury, which had released him from his contract last summer, posted messages of sadness on X, expressing their thoughts to his family and friends.

Jon Gold said: “He left a lasting impression on everyone who had the chance to meet him… the Courtney we knew was full of positivity and inspiration.”

The English FA also paid tribute, recalling that he had worn the captain’s armband at U18 level and expressing “thoughts are with Courtney’s family and friends during these difficult times.”

In 2019, Meppen‑Walter appeared again before the courts for drink‑driving, resulting in a twenty‑two‑month driving ban.
