Estudiantes sues Memphis Depay after gesture in Copa Libertadores

A new feud has erupted around Memphis Depay after Estudiantes filed a formal complaint with CONMEBOL, over the alleged gesture by the Dutch top scorer during the first leg of the Copa Libertadores quarter‑final. The incident occurred after the equaliser by Corinthians against the Argentine opponent.

Incident during the Copa Libertadores quarter‑final

The first match between Corinthians and Estudiantes ended in a 1‑1 draw. Corinthians came back after an early own goal and scored the equaliser through Kaio César. With this result the team broke a run of three consecutive defeats. The confrontation is part of the South American Champions League.

After the equaliser, Memphis Depay is alleged to have raised his middle finger towards an Estudiantes supporter. The gesture was spread via social media, with the Dutch top scorer clearly aimed at the Argentine fans.

Consequences and aftermath

Estudiantes, a club from Argentina, has filed an official complaint with CONMEBOL's disciplinary committee, condemning the offensive act. Following the complaint, CONMEBOL must soon issue a ruling and inform the involved clubs.

The second leg is scheduled for the night of Wednesday 16 to Thursday 17 September, Dutch time, with kickoff at 02:30. This tie determines who progresses to the tournament semi‑final.

Next weekend Corinthians play a top clash away at Flamengo, keeping the attention of the South American football world captive.
