Everton ordered to pay Burnley £35m compensation

🇬🇧

Everton have been ordered to pay Burnley £35 million in compensation and interest after an independent disciplinary panel ruled in Burnley's favour over a breach of Premier League profitability and sustainability rules.

The panel found Everton exceeded PSR limits during the 2021‑22 season, a breach that contributed to Burnley's relegation that year.

Burnley were awarded £26 million in damages plus £9.1 million in interest, reflecting the financial loss from dropping into the Championship, including reduced broadcasting and commercial revenue.

The club had originally sought up to £60 million in compensation; the £35 million award provides a major financial boost after years of uncertainty.

Everton described the ruling as “surprising and angered”, called it fundamentally flawed in law and fact, and announced plans to appeal, insisting the payment will not affect future PSR calculations.
