Ex-Italian star Dani Osvaldo monitored in clinic after emergency surgery

The 40‑year‑old former Italian star Dani Osvaldo has been in intensive care at a hospital in Buenos Aires since Thursday following an emergency lung operation. The emergency surgery was performed after sudden chest pains that led his relatives to the hospital and prompted immediate medical assistance.

Medical Findings and Procedure

Doctors diagnosed an inflammation and a severe pleural effusion, a dangerous accumulation of fluid between the lung and the chest wall. The finding made an immediate operation necessary, during which a portion of lung tissue was removed.

Daniel Osvaldo’s family issued a statement on Sunday, emphasizing that he is responsive and doing well, although his condition remains critical.

Since the procedure, Osvaldo has been monitored in the intensive care unit of the Buenos Aires hospital. The doctors stressed that, despite the critical situation, there is no threat to his life.

Career and International Appearances

Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, known from Serie A and as a former Italian national team player, played for seven clubs in Serie A, including AS Roma, Juventus Turin and Inter Milan, as well as for clubs in Spain, England and Portugal.

He earned 14 caps for the Italian national team and scored four goals, all in the qualification for the 2014 World Cup.

After retiring in 2020 at Banfield, he founded a rock band and spoke publicly in 2024 about severe mental health issues, drug and alcohol addiction, as well as periods of isolation.

The cause of the pneumonia that led to the pleural effusion has not yet been determined, according to the medical report. The family hopes for a swift recovery and will keep the public informed about further developments.
