Ferran Torres' extra‑time goal prompts Messi's retirement

Ferran Torres struck the winner in the 106th minute as Spain beat Argentina 1‑0 after extra time in the New York World Cup final, a defeat that sealed Lionel Messi's decision to retire from the Argentina side.

Record‑breaking international career

The 39‑year‑old Lionel Messi departs as Argentina's all‑time appearance‑maker and top scorer, having amassed 125 goals in 207 caps. He has captained the national team since 2011 and lifted the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, cementing a two‑decade legacy.

In his final tournament Messi recorded eight goals and four assists, earning the Silver Ball behind Spain midfielder Rodri. He briefly overtook Miroslav Klose’s 16‑goal record before Kylian Mbappé finished the competition on 22 goals.

Retirement decision and future

Messi revealed he drafted his retirement statement on 21 July, two days after the final, but postponed its release. The death of his father Jorge, aged 68, on 8 August convinced him to confirm the decision.

He noted that the next Copa América is not until 2028, when he would be 41, and the 2030 World Cup would see him turn 43, leaving little incentive to return.

Messi previously stepped away after Argentina’s 2016 Copa América final loss to Chile, only to reverse course and help the team win the Copa América in 2021, the World Cup in 2022 and another Copa América in 2024. His performances in Qatar earned a second World Cup Golden Ball and contributed to an eighth Ballon d’Or. He also became the second player after Brazil’s Cafu to feature in three men’s World Cup finals, having been runner‑up in 2014.

At club level Messi will continue with Inter Miami, where he remains under contract for another two years.

With the number ten shirt now moving on, Messi leaves after 207 appearances, six World Cups and two decades of service, and there will be no comeback this time.
