FIFA rule blocks Vasco's Richarlison loan as Tottenham hits limit
Entenda how a FIFA regulation is stopping Vasco da Gama from securing striker Richarlison on loan, because Tottenham Hotspur has already reached the six‑player limit for loans to clubs outside its own federation. The Brazilian forward, a lifelong fan of the Rio club, had hoped to join his beloved side this summer.
FIFA loan limitation explained
Under FIFA rules a club may not have more than six players on loan with foreign federations unless the players are under‑21 home‑grown talents who have completed at least three seasons with the parent club between the ages of fifteen and twenty‑one. The exception therefore applies only to young players trained by the loaning club.
Tottenham's loan roster blocks the move
Tottenham currently has seven players out on loan, six of whom are with clubs in other countries: Pape Matar Sarr and Vicario at Juventus, Kevin Danso at Sunderland, Dragusin at Fiorentina, Souza at Porto, Takai at Sint‑Truiden and Min‑hyeok Yang at KVC Westerlo. Danso’s loan to Sunderland is domestic and does not count towards the foreign‑player ceiling.
None of these loaned players satisfy the under‑21 home‑grown exception, as they are either older than twenty‑one or were not developed by Tottenham. Consequently the club has already exhausted the six‑player quota for foreign loans.
Richarlison has made clear to Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi that he wishes to leave, and the English side has not even registered him for the Premier League. Everton also explored a deal but were unable to secure the striker.
Vasco president Pedrinho said he will not abandon the pursuit of the forward, despite the bureaucratic obstacle imposed by FIFA.
Richarlison’s contract with Tottenham runs until June 2027, and he will be free to sign a pre‑contract with another club from December.
