Five major absentees for World Cup 2026

Italy, Nigeria, Spain, the Netherlands and Argentina will be missing key players at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The absences stem from failed qualification, injuries and selection decisions. The five players highlighted are Alessandro Bastoni, Victor Osimhen, Fermín López, Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho. Italy failed to qualify after losing a UEFA play‑off penalty shootout to Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Alessandro Bastoni received a red card. Injuries and two defeats to Norway left the Azzurri in second place despite contributions from Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sandro Tonali and Federico Dimarco. Nigeria missed qualification after dropping points in crucial away fixtures despite a squad featuring Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Victor Boniface. The Super Eagles' absence removes one of Africa's most entertaining sides from the tournament. Fermín López of Barcelona was ruled out after a fractured foot required surgery following a La Liga match against Real Betis. The 23‑year‑old had recorded 13 goals and 17 assists this season under Hansi Flick and was expected to feature for Luis de la Fuente's Spain. Xavi Simons of Tottenham Hotspur suffered an ACL injury in a Premier League match against Wolves, ending his World Cup hopes. Ronald Koeman described the injury as “dramatic” for both player and country. Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United faces intense competition for a place in Lionel Scaloni's Argentina squad. Scaloni's preference for tactical balance could see the 21‑year‑old omitted despite his club form. The tournament will proceed without these talents, leaving fans of the United States, Canada and Mexico to watch a different set of stars. The 2026 World Cup will feature 48 teams despite these absences.
