Former Schalke coach Reis to take over Trabzonspor in the Süper Lig
At the Trabzon airport, Thomas Reis is welcomed by cheering fans, while the German is on the verge of taking the coaching position at Trabzonspor in the Turkish Süper Lig.
President and Arrival
Reis flew into the city by private jet; President Ertuğrul Doğan had the aircraft brought from Bulgaria to Trabzon to enable the deal to be finalized immediately. The arrival underscores the club's strong interest in the former Schalke‑04 and VfL‑Bochum manager.
Coaching Change and Candidates
Fatih Tekke stepped down from his role at the beginning of September by his own wish, so Huseyin Cimsir is currently acting as interim coach. The club initially looked for Stefano Pioli, but the Italian's high financial demands caused the deal to fall through.
After the breakdown of negotiations with Pioli, Trabzonspor selected Thomas Reis as the new head coach. According to journalist Yagız Sabuncuoglu, the agreement has already been reached and Reis will be presented in the coming hours.
Reis' Record and Expectations
Reis already knows the Turkish league well: at Samsunspor he recorded an average of 1.63 points per game over 72 league matches across roughly a year and a half. This experience is expected to help him stabilise the current situation at Trabzonspor.
He is currently in charge of Ludogorets in Bulgaria, where he achieved seven wins, three draws and one loss in 11 official matches. A release clause in his contract enables the upcoming move.
Trabzonspor has already signed world-class players such as goalkeeper André Onana, Fabinho and Mohamed Salah this summer. In addition, 23‑year‑old Sidny Lopes Cabral, a former Viktoria Köln player and Cape Verde international, is in the squad.
The club sees Reis as the ideal candidate to improve discipline and physical condition and to fill the spot left by Tekke. Fans hope that the German will soon be on the training ground with the new world stars and lead the team forward in the Süper Lig.
