Four dead after gunfire erupts at Mexican football match

At a modest football field in México, the final whistle sparked tragedy as gunfire erupted, leaving four people dead and one wounded. The shooting unfolded at the close of a local match, turning a routine evening into a scene of bloodshed and shock.

The incident occurred in the community of Las Malvas, within the municipality of Irapuato in the state of Guanajuato, on Wednesday night.

Official response

Consuelo Cruz Galindo, head of the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana, said the victims were caught in the middle of a clash between two criminal groups.

“Nuestro sistema de videovigilancia afortunadamente captó información importante,” she said, noting the footage could aid investigators.

She added, “Se deduce, hasta el momento, que hubo un fuego cruzado entre los integrantes de dos grupos,” confirming a cross‑fire.

The investigation has been handed to the Fiscalía, which suspects a cross‑fire between different criminal factions and that the victims were inadvertently caught in the exchange. Municipal Police, the National Guard and the Mexican Army launched a security operation to locate the shooters, but no arrests have been reported so far.

Agents from the Agencia de Investigación Criminal and forensic specialists are also examining ballistic evidence to identify the weapons used.

Mexican media reported that the armed confrontation took place after the football match had ended, confirming the timing of the violence.
