German coach Thomas Reis arrives at Trabzonspor to guide Mohamed Salah
While Mohamed Salah continues to find the net for Trabzonspor, the Turkish club has turned its attention to the bench, hiring German Thomas Reis to steer a struggling side back to contention after a run of defeats and an early Europa League exit, the appointment aims to revitalise the squad.
Thomas Reis appointed as new coach
Trabzonspor announced on Thursday that German Thomas Reis has signed a two‑year contract, leaving Bulgarian side Ludogorets to take charge. The club said Reis was attracted by the opportunity to work with former Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.
Reis will receive a guaranteed salary of €1 million for the 2026‑27 season and €1.2 million for 2027‑28. Trabzonspor will also pay Ludogorets €900,000 to terminate the 52‑year‑old coach’s contract.
Salah's form and club ambitions
Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah, the marquee signing after a nine‑year spell at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, has already netted four goals in five league matches. In a club statement Reis praised the Egyptian, saying, “Working with a player of his calibre is perhaps one of the best things that can happen to a coach,” and promised him “freedom in attack”.
Reis previously guided Samsunspor to a third‑place finish two seasons ago, trailing Istanbul giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe. “I know this place and I know how intense the games are here,” he told the club, highlighting his familiarity with Turkish football.
Trabzonspor, champions for the last time in 2022, sit ninth after five rounds of the Süper Lig. They suffered a 1‑0 defeat to Konyaspor last week and will meet Galatasaray on Saturday. The side also begins a six‑game Conference League campaign in Finland at KuPS Kuopio on 15 October.
Ludogorets expressed surprise at the offer, noting Reis’s desire to work with talents such as Salah, Fabinho and goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Black Sea club confirmed the €900,000 compensation figure.
