Germany’s coaching crossroads: Nagelsmann out, Klopp in the frame
Germany’s shock 1‑1 draw with Paraguay, followed by a 3‑4 penalty loss in the World Cup round of 16, led to the dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann as national coach. At the same time, the German federation has opened talks with former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp as a possible successor.
Nagelsmann had been appointed as Germany’s head coach in September 2023. His staff, including assistants Benjamin Glück and Benjamin Hübner, were also released following the World Cup exit.
The German Football Federation announced that, on the day of the decision, the shareholders’ representatives and the supervisory board unanimously terminated Nagelsmann’s contract, acting on a proposal from president Bernd Neuendorf. The statement was posted on the federation’s website.
Bernd Neuendorf said, “The German Football Federation sincerely thanks Julian Nagelsmann for the work since September 2023. He distinguished himself by immense commitment and exceptional ambition, and is a responsible and deeply integral person we all appreciate.”

Julian Nagelsmann reflected, “These last days, since our elimination, I have thought a lot and spoken with close people and federation officials. This decision was extremely difficult, but my main objective has always been the team’s success, and after such disappointment the squad deserves a fresh start without pressure.” The federation added that discussions have now begun with former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, who is currently unattached after leaving Liverpool in 2024. Klopp spent nine years at Liverpool, becoming a living legend of English football.Nagelsmann quits after World Cup exit, Klopp eyed as Germany boss
Klopp would aim to guide Germany to Euro 2028 glory, a tournament scheduled to be hosted by the United Kingdom and Ireland. The German side sees the potential appointment as a way to reset after the World Cup setback. The contrast between the abrupt end of Nagelsmann’s tenure and the prospect of Klopp’s arrival underscores the federation’s desire for a swift reset, with talks set to determine the next direction for the national team.
