Gil Swerts gets a decisive advantage ahead of the U21 group final
This Monday, Belgium will travel to Denmark for the decisive Euro U21 qualifying match. The encounter will pit the group leaders, the Belgians, against the runners‑up, the Danes, and will determine who will qualify directly for the final stage of the tournament. For Gil Swerts' youngsters, Friday's Danish match result provides a considerable advantage ahead of the trip.
Ranking Situation Before the Trip
The Belgian U21s currently occupy the top spot in their group with a two‑point lead over Denmark. This advantage comes especially from a win against Belarus and Wales, even though the performance has not fully convinced. The group therefore comes down to this final duel, dubbed the group 'final'.
Consequences of Friday's Danish Match
On Friday, Denmark drew 1‑1 with Austria, which prevented the Danes from taking the lead. This result keeps the Danes two points behind Belgium, meaning the Belgians only need to avoid defeat to secure direct qualification. In case of a loss, Belgium would fall back to second place and be forced to go through the playoffs.
The playoffs represent a risk that manager Gil Swerts wants to avoid. In 2025, the Belgian U21s had to go through that stage and were beaten 1‑3 by the Czech Republic, already under Swerts' guidance. A return to the Euro U21 without having to go through the playoffs is therefore considered essential by the Belgian Football Federation.
Vincent Mannaert, upon taking the helm of the federation, clearly stated his intention to re‑establish a winning culture across all Belgian youth teams. Failing to secure a second consecutive Euro appearance would be seen as a major, even fatal, failure for the manager.
The trip to Denmark therefore constitutes a crucial test for the Belgian youngsters. A positive result would not only guarantee direct qualification, but also boost the confidence of the coaching staff around Gil Swerts.
