GOAT Debate’ settled after Lionel Messi Argentina exit

125 goals and 207 caps define Lionel Messi Argentina’s storied career, but the 39‑year‑old announced his retirement from international football on Tuesday, releasing an emotional statement that left him looking dejected. Piers Morgan seized the moment, declaring his GOAT Debate’ settled as the Argentine icon bows out.

Messi’s farewell and legacy

Messi, 39, said he no longer had anything left to give, adding that the Argentina versus Spain clash at MetLife Stadium on July 19 would be his final appearance in the blue and white shirt. He also mourned the recent loss of his father, Jorge Messi, who died aged 68.

The Argentine side had just been beaten in the 2026 World Cup final by Spain, earning Messi a second silver medal after his 2022 triumph. Throughout his career he amassed 125 goals in 207 appearances, won two Copa America titles, Olympic gold and finally lifted the World Cup in 2022.

Morgan’s GOAT challenge

British journalist Piers Morgan, a 61‑year‑old fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, used the retirement to argue that the GOAT Debate’ is now settled. In a tweet he highlighted Ronaldo’s 146 international goals for Portugal and noted that Messi’s 125 goals rank second in history.

The post attracted roughly 3,000 comments, with many users disputing Morgan’s claim that four other players from this century outrank Messi.
