Há doubt after Messi quits, Argentina faces uncertain future
Há a stark contrast as Lionel Messi steps away after two decades, while the Albiceleste stare down a future clouded by questions over captaincy, the number ten and Lionel Scaloni’s tenure. His 125‑goal, 207‑appearance record ends, leaving a void that the federation must fill before the next World Cup.
Messi's farewell and record
Messi announced his retirement on Monday morning via a heartfelt letter, confirming that the decision came two days after Argentina’s 1‑0 loss to Spain in the final of the last Copa del Mundo on 19 July. In the note he wrote, “I have nothing left to give”, adding that he will now support the Albiceleste as a fan.
The Argentine legend departs with an unrivalled tally of 125 goals in 207 matches, including 21 goals in World Cups. His trophy cabinet holds a 2022 World Cup, a 2022 Finalissima, Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, an Olympic gold from 2008 and a 2005 U‑20 World Cup.
Argentina's looming questions
Coach Lionel Scaloni, whose contract runs Até December 2026, said after the Spain defeat that he will continue until then but intends to take a break afterwards. “Até dezembro eu vou continuar. E depois seguramente vou parar. Vou falar com o presidente, mas a ideia é relaxar e descansar um pouco”, he told reporters.
Messi had captained the side since 2011, a role later shared by Nicolás Otamendi, now 38, when Messi was on the bench, and by midfielder Rodrigo De Paul, who has also worn the armband in recent qualifiers.
There is also debate over the historic number 10. Claudia Tapia, president of the AFA, hinted in 2024 that the shirt could be retired after Messi’s exit. If it remains, the current contenders are River Plate forward Thiago Almada, 25, who has already taken the number in September qualifiers but is now injured, and Real Madrid‑trained Nico Paz, 21.
The Albiceleste, vice‑champions of the 2026 World Cup after a 1‑0 loss to Spain, now face a period of transition. With the captaincy, the number ten and Scaloni’s future all in flux, Argentina must chart a new course without its most iconic player.
