Haaland breaks Gerd Müller's record – 65 goals for Norway

Erling Haaland scored his 65th international goal in Norway’s match against Portugal, matching Gerd Müller’s exact strike rate after 57 appearances for the Federal Republic of Germany. The 26‑year‑old Manchester City striker thus set a remarkable record.

Goal to level the score at half‑time

After a free kick by Martin Ødegaard, which Diogo Costa saved from the Portuguese goal, the ball fell to Haaland in the penalty area. He seized the rebound and scored at the start of the second half to level the match.

Shortly afterwards, Gonçalo Ramos secured the win for Portugal by scoring the decisive goal. Thus the match ended with a victory for the Portuguese, while Haaland completed his personal milestone.

According to the Norwegian federation, the 26‑year‑old striker has now scored 65 goals in 57 internationals. Gerd Müller achieved the same tally after his 57th appearance for Germany, a record he set in June 1974 with a goal against Australia at the World Cup. Müller later ended his international career with 68 goals in 62 matches.

Haaland is still missing one goal to match Müller’s final tally of 68 goals, although he already boasts a higher goals‑per‑game ratio. He is already the most prolific scorer in Norway’s history, while Jørgen Juve, with 33 goals, occupies second place.

On Sunday Norway lost 1‑2 to Portugal, but Haaland wrote history again. Already before the match he had scored twice against Denmark, helping Norway to a 3‑2 win. The assist for the scorer came from Marius Nordnes.
