Jorge Jesus seeks truce: CR7 can rejoin the national team at will

On Monday 5 October 2026, after Portugal's 2‑1 victory over Norway at the Stádio do Dragão, coach Jorge Jesus said that Cristiano Ronaldo, the five‑time Ballon d'Or, can return to the national team whenever he wants, trying to ease the tension arising from the recent crisis.

Jesus's words on the misunderstanding

Jesus described the whole affair as a "misunderstanding" and emphasized that the stalemate situation is easily solvable. "I don't know what will happen. For me, everything is open. He must decide his future before the call‑up. If he plays and wants to be part of the national team, he can return whenever he wants, why not?" he said during the press conference.

The role of the federation president

The president of the Portuguese Federation, Pedro Proença, expressed the desire to arrange a meeting between Jesus and Ronaldo, describing the captain as "the greatest player in history" and "the supreme symbol of Portuguese identity". Proença recalled that Ronaldo has devoted more than two decades to Portuguese football and that his presence is always deserved.

Proença also stated: "We remain available to sit down together and resolve the misunderstanding. Cristiano is part of our heritage and will always be here whenever the coach wants him".

Jesus confirmed his willingness to attend the meeting, but clarified that he does not know when the issue will be resolved, as it also depends on the striker's decision.

The coach also reiterated that he does not intend to exclude the captain from the squad and that the decision to call up a player or not is his responsibility. He denied having asked for apologies as a condition for reconciliation.

In the context of the Nations League, Portugal finished the match with a positive result, but the Ronaldo issue remains at the centre of media attention, with continuous references to terms such as Highlights, Live, Video, Photo, Tennis, Drive, MotoGp, Pressing, Sportmediaset, XXL, News, Cup, Italy, Super Cup, Italian, Formula, Sport, Podcast, Lifestyle, Championships, Area, Help, FAQ, Info, Cookie, Policy, Abroad, NATIONS and LEAGUE, all present in the sports coverage.

CR7's future in the national team will therefore depend on a joint decision between Jesus, Proença and Ronaldo himself, while fans await the next Nations League fixture to see if the captain will return to the field.
