Jürgen Klopp faces criticism from Stefan Effenberg after defeat
National team coach Jürgen Klopp had to endure a 0-1 defeat in the home match against Greece, with the German national team creating few chances. Former player Stefan Effenberg sharply criticised the result and emphasised that the moment could hardly be more unfavourable for the new coach.

Effenberg's sharp criticism of the timing
Stefan Effenberg stated that the defeat could not have come at a more appropriate moment, adding: “It actually took a moment for me to process this 0-1 of the German national team against Greece.” He had already warned in his previous column about a heavy dampener for the newly sparked euphoria.
Effenberg further stressed that a worse result should not have occurred, because it would destroy the hope that arose with Klopp’s appointment. He concluded with the words: “Welcome to reality. Germany is no longer a top nation, but merely a follower in world football.”
Klopp relies on a broad squad
The new national coach nominated 44 players for the four Nations League matches, including numerous debutants, young talents and experienced figures. With this he wanted to give many a chance to prove themselves and rebuild the team.

The first impression of the initial 22 players from the matches against Greece and the Netherlands, however, showed that a personnel overhaul might require more time than many expect. The current quality is far removed from the world elite of Spain, England, France or Argentina.
Klopp’s own words after the Greece match were that it is a “process” to bring the German team back to the top. He pointed out that Greece currently sits at 42nd in the world rankings and has not even secured qualification for the upcoming World Cup.

In the 67th minute Fotis Ioannidis let a clear chance slip past goalkeeper Alexander Nübel, before Dimitrios Kourbelis shortly thereafter turned the 1-0 into the winning goal. The Greeks employed long balls and found a formula that the German defence could not solve.

Goalkeeper Alexander Nübel had to intervene several times, but it was Marc‑André ter Stegen who displayed brilliant saves in the subsequent games, especially in the 1-1 against the Netherlands, which according to Effenberg rather favoured the German team. Without these rescues the match against the Netherlands could have ended badly.
Effenberg summarises that reality is now unavoidable and the German national team has evolved from a top nation to a follower. The critical period for the DFB eleven has begun, and further improvements are necessary to return to the top.
