Lengthy knee surgery robs FC Chelsea captain James of the midfield

At the training ground in Cobham, Reece James, the 26‑year‑old captain of FC Chelsea, was discharged by the medical staff after a minor knee operation. The successful surgery means he will be unavailable for the team for several months, as the club emphasized in a statement. “Everyone at Chelsea wishes Reece a speedy recovery and will support him on his journey back onto the pitch,” it added.

Injury spell and current absence

James had already injured himself during a team training session and therefore missed the 5‑1 home win over Bournemouth on Saturday. Previously, he had to sit out the 0‑3 away loss to Brentford on 18 September due to thigh problems. According to The Athletic, the current period of absence will be around three months, with no exact return date yet announced.

Coach Xabi Alonso's tactical challenge

Coach Xabi Alonso often uses James in midfield, as he provides an additional option there. Due to the knee operation, Alonso now loses an important midfielder, further straining the already thin depth in the centre. Moisés Caicedo is already fit again and is expected to at least partially fill the gap until January.

Contract and market value

In March, FC Chelsea extended James's contract until 2032, committing the club long‑term to the English World Cup participant. His market value is reported in the reports as €60 million to €100 million, i.e., “reported at between 60 million and 100 million”.

James comes from the club's own academy, made his professional debut for the Blues in 2019, and has been captain since the 2023/24 season. With 235 league appearances, he is one of the most frequently used players in the club's history.

The club emphasizes that James has already begun rehabilitation at the Cobham sports centre and that the medical department will continue to monitor him. The upcoming fixtures, including the away match against Everton, will have to be contested without him.
