Liverpool's £43m hunt for Khephren Thuram: a midfield gamble

🇬🇧

On Anfield's training ground, the echo of boots on the pitch mirrors a new ambition: Liverpool are circling Juventus midfielder Khephren Thuram. The Reds have set a £43 million price tag on the 25‑year‑old Frenchman, hoping he can revive a dip in form and bolster a midfield that underperformed last season.

Last season, Liverpool's midfield was identified as a weak spot, with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch failing to reach their usual standards. The club therefore turned its attention to external options to rejuvenate the centre of the park.

Liverpool now face a bidding war for Thuram, with Manchester United, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United also interested. Galatasaray and Fenerbahce have made enquiries, although the Frenchman is reportedly reluctant to move to Turkey, while Paris Saint‑Germain monitor his situation.

Juventus have signalled willingness to sell Thuram as part of a broader plan to reinvest in their squad. The Italian club has set an asking price of £43 million for the midfielder.

Thuram, 25, arrived at Juventus for the 2024/25 campaign and helped the side qualify for the UEFA Champions League, earning a place in the Serie A Team of the Season. Yet his last league campaign produced six goal involvements, four fewer than the previous year, indicating a dip in output.

His physical dominance and athletic profile suit the demands of the Premier League, while his progressive passing could aid Liverpool in advancing the ball from deep positions. These traits are seen as potential tools to break down stubborn defences.

At a £43 million valuation, Thuram represents a potentially shrewd acquisition in a market where prices have surged. Liverpool’s interest, alongside pursuits of Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and the abandoned chase for RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, underscores a broader strategy to reinforce their attack.
