Lukaku criticizes Tedesco appointment as Belgian coach
Romelu Lukaku has publicly criticized the Royal Belgian Football Association’s decision to appoint Domenico Tedesco as head coach following the 2022 World Cup. In an interview, Lukaku stated Thierry Henry was the ideal successor.
Lukaku questioned the board’s choice, calling the process flawed. He emphasized Henry’s understanding of Belgian football and player relations as key reasons for his preference.
The striker, who scored 68 goals in 108 appearances for Belgium, reiterated his stance during the interview. He did not hold back in expressing his disappointment with the appointment.
Domenico Tedesco took charge in February 2023 after Roberto Martinez’s departure. Tedesco led Belgium to a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, failing to progress past the group stage.
Belgium’s poor Euro 2024 performance intensified scrutiny over the coaching appointment. Lukaku’s comments add to the growing criticism of the federation’s decision-making process.
The Royal Belgian Football Association has not responded to Lukaku’s remarks. Tedesco remains under contract until 2026 with an option for extension.
