Lyon's gamble on 20‑year‑old Duranville amid Belgian talent surge

🇧🇪

Twenty‑year‑old Belgian winger Julien Duranville has left Borussia Dortmund to join Olympique Lyon, a move confirmed Thursday after the player announced his departure on Instagram on Wednesday. The transfer ends a three‑and‑a‑half‑year spell in Dortmund’s black and yellow kit and signals a new chapter for the young winger.

Duranville arrived at Borussia Dortmund from RSC Anderlecht in January 2023, having been hailed as one of the most promising offensive talents from the Neerpede district. His reputation for explosiveness and dribbling quickly made him a standout prospect in the German club’s youth ranks.

Injuries, however, curtailed his progress, limiting him to just fifteen Bundesliga appearances, nine Champions League outings and a single cup match. His only goal for Dortmund came in the cup against fourth‑tier Phoenix Lübeck.

On the international stage, Duranville earned his first Belgium senior cap in the 2024 Nations League match against Israel, a game Belgium won 1‑3. The appearance remains his sole senior international to date.

Seeking regular minutes, he spent the second half of the season on loan at Swiss side FC Basel, where he added two goals and one assist to his record. His performances in Switzerland demonstrated his ability to regain form after limited opportunities in Germany.

Borussia Dortmund posted a farewell message, writing, “We thank Juju for his three and a half years in black and yellow and wish him all the best for his further career and his family.” The statement was posted on the club’s official channels on Thursday.

At Olympique Lyon, Duranville joins a squad that values speed and creativity on the flanks, and he will compete for a place alongside fellow Belgian Malick Fofana, who has already established himself in French football.

The move underscores Ligue 1’s growing appeal for young Belgian talents, with clubs like Lyon investing in promising wingers to bolster their attacking options. Such transfers highlight the cross‑border flow of talent between the Bundesliga, Swiss Super League and Ligue 1.
