Manchester United's defensive upgrade as Andrea Medina signs
22‑year‑old defender Andrea Medina has signed for Manchester United Women on a contract until June 2029, with an option for a further year. The former Atletico Madrid player made 131 appearances over four seasons and earned a senior Spain call‑up in May.
At youth level Medina boasts a decorated record, having won the FIFA U20 World Cup and lifted the UEFA U19 Championship twice. These achievements underline her experience on the international stage despite her age.
"Competing against United last season showed me how strong the group is and just how much this club means to our supporters," Medina said, reflecting on her previous encounter with the English side. Her comments highlight the appeal United holds for emerging talent.
Matt Johnson, director of women's football at Manchester United, praised her, stating: "Andrea has all of the technical attributes, character and determination required to thrive at Manchester United. She is a player who we have admired for a long time and we are delighted to add her unique qualities to our group, particularly after significant interest from clubs across Europe." Johnson's remarks confirm the strategic intent behind the signing.
The deal runs until June 2029, with a club‑option for an additional year, signalling a long‑term commitment from both player and club. This contract length provides United with stability in the defensive department.
Medina added that she is "excited to join a team that is determined to write its own chapter," indicating her readiness to contribute immediately. The defender's integration will be watched closely as United aim to strengthen their backline.
