Maresca sets Rodri’s surgery date, eyes City’s midfield revival

Italian coach Enzo Maresca announced that Manchester City midfielder Rodri will undergo back surgery next Monday, a procedure delayed since before the World Cup, meaning he will miss the Premier League opener on 23 August against Bournemouth while the club leans on new signing Elliot Anderson.

The operation had originally been scheduled for the pre‑tournament period but was postponed so the Spain captain could take part in the World Cup. Maresca said the delay allowed Rodri to feature in the competition before undergoing surgery.

After the procedure Rodri will receive a holiday and a rest period before rejoining the squad, reflecting the coach’s confidence in a full recovery. He added that the World Cup winner and Ballon d’Or laureate “will be back with us” once he completes the recovery process.

Rodri’s absence adds to a challenging summer for Manchester City’s midfield as the Premier League campaign begins on 23 August against Bournemouth. Recent signing Elliot Anderson is being positioned as the primary in‑house solution while the Spanish midfielder recovers.

This is not Rodri’s first serious injury; an ACL tear in 2024 kept him out for much of the 2024/25 season. Manchester City hope this recovery will be quicker than that previous spell.

Maresca also noted that the final batch of World Cup returnees will be integrated into training three to four days before the Community Shield, giving the squad a narrow window to prepare. The timetable underscores the club’s intent to have the full complement ready for the season‑opening fixture.
