Mark van Bommel under fire after Belgium's disaster
Belgium suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat in France, at the Stade de France, while it was still leading 0-1 with fifteen minutes left. This setback puts its chances of finishing second in the group at risk and jeopardises its ambition in the Nations League.
Solid first half but insufficient
During the first forty‑five minutes, the Red Devils displayed good defensive organisation. “In the first half, we were solid in our defensive game with the wingers helping the full‑backs,” said Philippe Albert. The right side even saw Dodi Lukebakio finish a very nice move, a sign of a budding offensive threat.
After the break, the absence of Youri Tielemans and Kevin De Bruyne was felt, while Roméo Lavia shone. “During an hour of play, Roméo Lavia was the best Red Devil on the pitch. The kid has everything. His assist for Lukebakio alone was worth the trip,” Albert highlighted.
Olise's decisive turning point
Michael Olise’s introduction immediately changed the match’s dynamic. “The French bench made the difference. I wonder how many goals we would have conceded over the two games if Zidane had fielded his best players from the kickoff,” added the commentator, echoed by Albert.

“When you have players like Olise who score two goals and provide two assists against you in less than forty minutes, it’s hard to get out of it,” Philippe Albert clarified, highlighting the striker’s explosive impact.
Romelu Lukaku, despite the difficult evening, retains his coach’s confidence. “Lukaku is vital for Belgium because there will never again be anyone to replace him in the national team,” Albert affirmed.
Four goals conceded in 14 minutes: Belgium's disaster at the Stade de France
With six points, Belgium sits third in the group. “We must finish second in the group when we look at Italy but also Turkey. These two nations are nowhere at the moment,” Albert concluded, reminding that “the accounting balance is not enough in my eyes in a Nations League that must be taken seriously and where Rudi Garcia had met his objectives.” He also added that “the French were too strong,” underscoring France’s superiority.
