Mauro Júnior chooses Brazil, but the Oranje remains untouched

Mauro Júnior, captain of PSV, has chosen to play for the Brazilian national team, but Valentín Driessen says this does not represent a loss for the Netherlands. The former Dutch candidate emphasizes that the Oranje should not be frightened by his absence.

In the Kick‑off podcast, broadcast by De, Driessen says: “We must not suddenly lose our composure because Mauro does not play for the Dutch national team but for Brazil.” He emphasizes that this is not a reason to become worried.

First call-up from Ancelotti

The first call-up from Carlo Ancelotti came last week and, according to Driessen, does not yet mean that Mauro will secure a permanent place in the Seleção. “I think they have asked a lot of new Brazilians for the squad,” he explains, adding that there are both senior players and newcomers.

Driessen also points out that Mauro, although a fine player, is not Roberto Carlos or Marcelo, the true legends. “Nice if you had had him, but now that he is not there, I would not lose sleep over it,” says the journalist.

In the past, the versatile left foot indicated that he was open to a Dutch passport, provided he would at least remain on the radar for the Dutch national team.

Driessen understands Mauro’s standpoint, but notes that the KNVB has not changed its stance; a Dutch passport automatically puts a player in the spotlight of the national coach.

The contrast between Mauro’s Brazilian (Brazil) call and Driessen’s reassurance underscores that the Oranje does not need to worry; the national team remains unscathed, regardless of individual choices.
