McTominay's renewal echoes the Kvaratskhelia saga at Napoli

McTominay's renewal echoes the Kvaratskhelia saga at Napoli

Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay, of the Scotland national team, has asked Napoli to reopen negotiations for a new contract, according to Il Mattino via TuttoNapoli; the club must reach an agreement quickly to prevent the striker from entertaining offers in January, including Real Madrid.

McTominay's financial demands

McTominay earns about €3 million per season, but his representatives are asking for more than €8 million to extend the contract from June 2028 to 2030. Napoli, which in the summer had made an offer around €5 million, remains far below the requested amount.

President Aurelio De Laurentiis does not consider the renewal a priority, still having almost two years of contract left to run, while the player's side wants to close the deal as soon as possible.

Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italia remains optimistic, stating: “McTominay’s renewal is an important piece. The club is already working to find an agreement and I believe that in the end a solution can be reached.”

The parallel with the Kvaratskhelia case

The case echoes that of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, named Serie A Player of the Year for the 2022‑23 season, who earned a salary of €1.5 million and received from the Partenopei a raise proposal of around €5 million plus bonuses, with a valuation exceeding €100 million.

Kvaratskhelia rejected the offer, asked to leave in January 2025 and moved to Paris Saint‑Germain for €70 million plus bonuses, with a salary of about €9 million; the Partenopei won the league title without him.

McTominay has also been named Player of the Season for 2024‑25, but his contract expires in December, when he turns thirty, and his resale value should decrease, making January decisive. After undergoing a heart procedure, he was cleared this week and coach Massimiliano Allegri hopes to see him on the pitch for the match against Frosinone on Saturday.
