Messi calls Yamal’s rise ‘incredible’ ahead of World Cup final

In a New York press event ahead of the World Cup final, Lionel Messi praised 19‑year‑old Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal, calling him one of the best players in the world and recalling a famous 2007 baby photo that first linked the two stars.

Yamal, the Spanish teenager, will face Messi on the pitch and has been dazzling for FC Barcelona, following in the footsteps of the Argentine legend.

The iconic image dates back to 2007, when a 20‑year‑old Messi took part in a charity photoshoot that paired FC Barcelona players with babies.

Speaking at the New York gathering, Messi described the picture as “something incredible” and likened it to the twists of life itself.

He added that Yamal already has a chance to make history, but warned that opponents will try to prevent him from reaching his best, noting the challenge will be difficult.

Messi also said, “He plays for the club I love and I wish him all the best. His success is also good for FC Barcelona,” highlighting his own contributions to the club’s trophy cabinet.

Photographer Joan Monfort, who captured the 2007 shot, said his photos are circulating worldwide again this week and called the resurgence “incredible.”

Monfort remarked that a final featuring Messi and Yamal is better than any film scenario, noting that nobody could have predicted the baby would become the player he is today, nor Messi’s own rise to greatness.
