Milan revives interest in Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, OM transfer market heats up

AC Milan plans to revive its interest in the Danish midfielder as early as January 2027. Ruben Amorim stated that he particularly appreciates the profile of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. The player could thus find himself at the heart of discussions during the next winter transfer window.
The Lombardy club was already interested last summer and has not abandoned this avenue. Amorim believes that the profile of the Danish player matches his requirements: recovery work, experience, ability to protect the defence and simplicity in the first distribution. These qualities make Højbjerg an ideal candidate to strengthen the Milan midfield.
His experience in the Premier League and with the Danish national team constitutes an additional asset for AC Milan. The Portuguese coach sees in him a player capable of combining defensive discipline and effective distribution.
Release clause and Marseille context
In Marseille, Højbjerg's contract runs until June 2028, but a release clause of two million euros would activate at the end of the 2026‑2027 season, according to L’Équipe. This provision makes the case particularly interesting for the Italian club in the coming months.
Last summer, OM had reached an agreement with Newcastle for a transfer of eight million euros, plus two million euros in bonuses, before the Danish player refused to join the Magpies. This refusal kept Højbjerg tied to OM, strengthening the relevance of a possible exit via the clause.
In July, several Italian sources already mentioned Højbjerg as an option being studied by the Lombardy club. The subject thus grew in prominence during the summer, fueling speculation about a possible winter transfer.
A tweet from @cmdotcom confirmed that AC Milan would like to resume the push this winter to recruit the Danish midfielder. This information further strengthens the rumours already widely circulated in the Italian press.
It remains to be seen whether Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, very attached to OM, will agree to leave the Marseille club this time. The next winter transfer window will determine whether the Milan project will materialise.
