Nathan Ake’s farewell reveals the personal cost behind his City legacy

🇬🇧

Netherlands defender Nathan Ake confirmed his permanent move from Manchester City to Turkish side Fenerbahçe in a deal reported at £7 million plus £1.5 million in add‑ons, bringing the total to £8.5 million. The 30‑year‑old posted an emotional farewell message, reflecting on six years, 12 trophies and personal milestones in Manchester.

Director of football Hugo Viana issued a club statement describing Ake as “an outstanding, model professional who set high standards for everyone”. Viana’s tribute highlighted Ake’s influence both on the pitch and within the training environment.

In his own message, Ake revealed that he lost his father while living in Manchester, calling it one of the hardest moments of his life. He also noted that he married during his City tenure and that his two children were born there.

Ake thanked his teammates, the manager and staff for every shared moment, and expressed gratitude to the fans for their support through highs and lows. He emphasized that Manchester City felt like home from day one.

Pep Guardiola consistently valued Ake for his dependability, versatility and professionalism, qualities Viana praised. Ake’s ability to operate across the defensive line gave Guardiola tactical flexibility, especially during the club’s Treble‑winning 2022‑23 season.

Ake listed the 12 trophies he helped collect: four Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League, a Club World Cup, three Carabao Cups, two FA Cups and a Community Shield. These honours underline his presence in one of English football’s most decorated eras.

Following his World Cup duties with the Netherlands, Ake will join Fenerbahçe’s pre‑season camp in Austria as part of his integration into the Turkish side.

A recent feature titled “Man City 2026 World Cup Watch” noted that Ake suffered heartbreak in a dramatic Netherlands penalty‑shootout finale.

As he embarks on his new chapter in Istanbul, supporters will watch how Ake translates his experience into the Süper Lig, while Manchester City fans remember his contributions.
