Nations League drama in Thessaloniki: the Oranje turns deficit around

In the cool evening light of the Thessaloniki stadium the first half began with a terrifying 35 seconds for the Dutch defence, when Vangelis Pavlidis already launched a dangerous attack. The Dutch team soon seemed to struggle; the first half was described by many as downright poor.

Turnaround in the second half

After a short break Virgil van Dijk came onto the field and within an hour of play time he scored the first goal, making the score 1‑2. Shortly afterwards substitute Tijjani Reijnders appeared on the scene and delivered the equaliser, turning the Dutch side into the leading party.

Substitutions that made the difference

National team coach Xavi Hernández made striking choices in the starting lineup: Jurriën and Quinten Timber debuted together, Ruben van Bommel started, and Mexx Meerdink was given an attacking role. Later Hernández introduced Joshua Zirkzee and debutant Gjivai Zechiël, while Denzel Dumfries scored several times, although one of his goals was disallowed by the VAR for offside.

The first goal by Dumfries, which brought the score to 2‑2 within six minutes, was controversially ruled out because the assist from a Greek player was deemed offside by the referee. The incident sparked a wave of criticism towards referee Marco Guida and his assistants, with questions raised about whether the VAR decision was correct.

Controversy surrounding the referee's decision

Fans and analysts voiced strong criticism of the decision: “Offside is not determined by the referee, but by the assistant referee,” and “The referee is a few drachmas richer.” The discontent led to calls for an official UEFA investigation into the officiating team.

In addition to the controversy over Dumfries’ goal, an earlier attempt by Christos Tzolis was ruled out because Pavlidis, from an off‑side position, impeded Bart Verbruggen. A potential penalty for a clear handball was also not awarded, which heightened the frustration of the Dutch players and supporters.

Result and group position

With the final result of 2‑2 the Dutch remain unbeaten in the group stage, but now sit behind Greece, the leader, in the standings. The team has shown that it can respond under pressure, but the controversy surrounding the officiating will undoubtedly dominate the discussions in the coming days.
