Netherlands lack sharpness ahead of World Cup opener
Netherlands suffered setbacks in their final World Cup warm-up, losing defender Jurriën Timber and goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to injury.
Bondscoach Ronald Koeman admitted concerns despite a 4-0 win over Uzbekistan. Timber, expected to partner Virgil van Dijk in defence, was ruled out with a groin issue. Lutsharel Geertruida was added to the squad as his replacement.
Timber’s absence leaves a void in defence. Koeman had called him the first choice alongside Van Dijk, citing his aggressive defending and tactical intelligence. Jan Paul van Hecke remains a reliable option, but the depth is now thin.
Donyell Malen failed to convert chances in both warm-up matches. The Roma striker, who led his club with 14 goals last season, managed no shots on target. Cody Gakpo scored twice from penalties, the only goals for Netherlands in the friendlies.
Malen is still likely to start against Japan, with Memphis Depay not yet fully fit. Koeman stated: “I spoke to him. He’s not at 100%. It’s short notice, yes.”
Verbruggen exited early against Uzbekistan after a collision with Abdukodir Khusanov. Mark Flekken replaced him, marking his first appearance since Algeria in a different starting XI. Koeman said: “We’ll assess him in Kansas City.”
Frenkie de Jong played as a makeshift fifth defender in a system designed to replicate Japan’s approach. He admitted: “It’s not my favourite position, but I do what’s best for the team.”
