Newport’s defensive gamble: Kyle Cameron returns as club rebuilds
Defender Kyle Cameron has signed for Newport County on a free transfer after mutually terminating his contract with Bromley, marking his return to Rodney Parade for a second spell. The 29‑year‑old joins the Exiles as they begin pre‑season under interim manager Chris Todd, ahead of the League Two campaign.
Cameron, a product of Newcastle United’s academy, first arrived at Newport on loan in 2016, making eight appearances before an injury cut the spell short. He later moved to Notts County in the summer of 2025, where he contributed to the club’s promotion to League One as champions. His experience in English lower leagues and familiarity with Newport’s environment make him a strategic addition for a side lacking a permanent manager.
At Bromley, Cameron featured in 18 league matches before his contract was terminated by mutual consent. He played the full 90 minutes in Bromley’s 2‑1 victory over Newport on New Year’s Day. His consistent performances at centre‑back attracted Newport’s recruitment drive led by chairman Huw Jenkins.
Newport County, who escaped relegation to the National League on the final day of the 2025‑26 season, have already added seven new signings this summer. The club’s recent departures include Christian Fuchs, Bobby Kamwa, Matt Baker and Michael Spellman, all of whom turned down contract offers. Cameron joins fellow newcomers Harrison Biggins, Christian Doidge, Cameron Norman, Dan Sassi, Shaquille Gwengwe and Yahya Bamba, bolstering a squad in transition.
For Newport, Cameron provides a familiar defensive option as the club rebuilds under interim leadership. His prior experience against the team and knowledge of the league should help stabilise the back line ahead of the upcoming season. Cameron, meanwhile, secures regular playing time and a chance to re‑establish himself at a club where he previously featured.
