Nottingham Forest challenges Ajax for Michael Noonan
Ajax’s pursuit of 17‑year‑old Irish striker Michael Noonan has been matched by Premier League side Nottingham Forest, which, under Irish manager Andy Reid, is also vying for the Shamrock Rovers forward ahead of his 18th birthday on 31 July, when a UK work permit will no longer be required.
Nottingham Forest’s interest was reported by the Nottingham Post, which noted the club’s intent to secure Noonan before he becomes eligible for a UK work permit. The club’s pursuit follows recent moves by Chelsea and Manchester City to sign young Irish talent.
Celtic and Hoffenheim have also been named as admirers of the teenager, adding further competition for Ajax’s target. Both clubs were listed alongside the Dutch side as potential destinations for the Irish forward.
Noonan remains under contract with Shamrock Rovers until the end of the calendar year, limiting immediate transfer options. The Irish club has indicated no urgency to sell, preferring to retain the striker for upcoming fixtures.
Shamrock Rovers will play Champions League qualifying matches against Maltese champions Floriana on 7 and 14 July, and hope to keep Noonan available for those games. The club’s schedule suggests it will not rush a deal before the qualifiers.
Manager Stephen Bradley said, “Michael is one of the best young players in the country. He can do a bit of everything, and his mentality stands out – he works hard, is dedicated and truly wants to become a top player.” Bradley, who oversees Shamrock Rovers, praised the striker’s versatility and ambition.
Noonan has already amassed 64 first‑team appearances for Shamrock Rovers, scoring three goals in 28 matches last season and starting twelve times. The Irish newspaper The 42 reported in early June that Ajax is his preferred destination after a visit to the club’s De Toekomst training complex.
