Oranje face Morocco with penalty shoot-out looming after Gakpo’s personal loss

🇳🇱

Cody Gakpo opened the scoring for Oranje in the 1/16 final of the World Cup against Morocco, but the match was immediately overshadowed by personal tragedy. Gakpo’s partner lost their son during pregnancy, yet the PSV forward chose to remain with the squad.

Teun Koopmeiners converted the first penalty for Oranje after a miss from Morocco’s El Aynaoui struck the crossbar. The first half of extra time yielded no clear chances, with both teams seemingly bracing for a shoot-out.

Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made a crucial save to deny Morocco’s Rahimi, producing a reaction of disbelief from the Moroccan bench. The intervention kept Oranje in the tie at 0-0.

The deadlock was broken in the 90th minute when Morocco equalised. Ex-Club Brugge defender Bilal Talbi headed in from a set-piece, with M’Baye Diop applying the finish. The goal forced the match into extra time and left Oranje facing the prospect of a penalty shoot-out.

Oranje now prepare to face the consequences of a tightly contested encounter. The emotional weight on Gakpo and his teammates will be immense as they consider their next step.
