Anis Hadj Moussa scores winner as Netherlands lose farewell friendly
Anis Hadj Moussa scored in the 86th minute to give Algeria a 1‑0 victory over the Netherlands in a pre‑World Cup friendly at De Kuip. It was the Netherlands’ first defeat since a 1‑0 loss to Germany in the Nations League in October 2024.
Coach Ronald Koeman selected a starting XI that matches his expected World Cup roster. Crysencio Summerville made his debut as right winger, and Mats Wieffer, returning after a year out of the national team, started at right back. Donyell Malen occupied the central forward position, leaving Memphis Depay on the bench.
Summerville created the first Dutch chance by receiving a pass from Jan Paul van Hecke and feeding Tijjani Reijnders. The ball reached Malen, whose shot struck the post. A second attempt saw Cody Gakpo pass to Summerville, whose cross was ruled out for off‑side Reijnders.
Rain later made play sloppy, and Summerville turned the ball over, allowing Algeria to become more threatening. Micky van de Ven prevented a Mohamed Amoura effort with a sliding tackle.

The second half saw Robin Roefs replace Bart Verbruggen as goalkeeper. Justin Kluivert, Jorrel Hato, Nathan Aké and Memphis Depay entered for Summerville, Virgil van Dijk, Van de Ven and Cody Gakpo respectively. Depay moved to the central striker role while Malen shifted to the right flank, where he missed a chance. Kluivert, returning from a knee injury, impressed before his hard shot was saved by Algerian keeper Luca Zidane. Luca Zidane is the son of the French football legend. Algeria started Ramiz Zerrouki, who spent the previous season on loan from Feyenoord at FC Twente, but he remained on the bench after halftime. Lutsharel Geertruida, not selected for the World Cup, came on before the final substitution of Jan Paul van Hecke. The defeat ended a streak of unbeaten farewell matches dating back to June 2006, with only a 1‑1 draw against Austria in that period. The Netherlands travel to the United States for a June 8 friendly against Uzbekistan before opening the World Cup against Japan on June 14.
