Owono closes Instagram after racist threats linked to tragic death

The goalkeeper of the Andorra team, Jesus Owono, closed his Instagram profile after receiving threats and racially‑tinged insults. The offenses came after a tackle on the field that caused the death of Jesus de Miguel, a striker for Tenerife.
The Spanish police have opened an investigation for alleged involuntary manslaughter. The deceased player had, until yesterday morning, more than 30,000 followers on Instagram. He later deactivated his own account.

The Real Madrid coach, Jose Mourinho, expressed his condolences, describing the incident as a “truly very difficult moment” for Owono. Mourinho said: “I think it is a shocking event for everyone, especially for the football world, for people like us who go onto the pitch every day to compete; it is a hard, sad situation.” He added that his thoughts are with the family and friends of the late player and that it must be an extremely difficult moment also for the other footballer involved, Owono.
