Paredes' Instagram apology after World Cup final controversy

Midfielder Leandro Paredes broke his silence following Argentina’s 1‑0 World Cup final loss to Spain by posting an emotional message on Instagram, acknowledging the defeat while expressing pride in the team’s effort. He also addressed the criticism surrounding his post‑match conduct, which had sparked worldwide backlash.

Argentina fell 1‑0 to Spain after extra‑time, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal for the Spaniards. The match‑deciding strike came in the second period of extra time, sealing the world title for Spain.

Immediately after the final whistle, Paredes seized a Spanish World Cup winner by the throat and became involved in a confrontation with Gavi. He then pushed the Spaniard, causing him to fall to the ground, and the footage quickly circulated worldwide, prompting strong reactions.

Paredes had already committed several hard tackles during the game and hovered on the brink of a second yellow card, meaning a dismissal was a real possibility. Nevertheless, he was allowed to complete the match, which highlighted the narrow margin between staying on the pitch and being sent off.

The incident dominated headlines, casting a shadow over his on‑field contributions and painting him in a negative light. In his Instagram post, Paredes wrote: "Today I write with enormous pain in my heart, because we could not give you the joy that our country deserves." He continued: "But at the same time my chest is full of pride because we gave everything we had and raised our flag as high as possible," adding thanks to his teammates and noting, "It was an honour to be part of the best Argentine selection in history."
