Penalty obsession: Arne Slot’s only hurdle in Dutch coach interview

🇳🇱

On a sun‑blazed terrace in Ibiza, KNVB director Nigel de Jong greets Arne Slot for a candid interview, and the column dated 2 July 2026 makes clear that the only agenda is penalties – a point underscored by a quote about “hupjes, huppeltjes, danspasjes, rare omweggetjes”.

Mossou argues that the hunt for a new Dutch national team coach can be short because Slot has long carried the same number, and that de Jong’s only tasks are a phone call, a trip to Ibiza and picking a beach bar.

Once on the island, the director and the trainer have just one matter to discuss – penalties – and the KNVB director warns that if Slot repeats Ronald Koeman’s dated view that "ja maar een gedeelte is natuurlijk niet te trainen", only one option remains.

Gyuri Vergouw, dubbed the “Penaltyprofessor”, told this week that pilots, surgeons, commandos and firefighters use specially designed drills to stay rational under extreme stress.

A coach who ignores such preparation is deemed unsuitable, Mossou notes, pointing to mental repetition, stimulus overload and fidelity simulations as tools to confront threatening scenarios.

He cites Teun Koopmeiners and Wout Weghorst, who both scored against Morocco by employing a fixed trap and a normal run‑up, thereby avoiding reliance on keeper tricks or nerves.

Mossou repeats his warning that any international who tries “hupjes, huppeltjes, danspasjes, rare omweggetjes” or Quinten Timber’s “crazy playground run‑up” in training will never be selected again for Oranje.

Because winning penalty shoot‑outs is essential for tournament success, Mossou advises hiring one or two specialists and exploiting every data point for both keeper and takers, lest the coach be sent to exile on the island of Elba.

The column concludes with a poll asking readers to vote for their dream Dutch coach and a final wish of good luck to Slot as he faces the penalty challenge.
