Postecoglou’s bold half‑time gamble sidelines Ronaldo in Saudi showdown

Postecoglou’s bold half‑time gamble sidelines Ronaldo in Saudi showdown

Al Nassr overturned a 2‑0 half‑time deficit to beat rivals Al Ettifaq 3‑2 on Tuesday, but the comeback came after new boss Ange Postecoglou sent Cristiano Ronaldo off the pitch at the break, a move that sparked debate in Saudi football where the Portuguese star earns £488,000 a day.

Al Nassr’s first half collapsed when goalkeeper Bento was dismissed in the 12th minute for a challenge on former Fulham midfielder Mousa Dembele after rushing out of his box. Al Ettifaq capitalised through Ondrej Duda and Alvaro Medran, establishing a two‑goal lead at the interval.

Ronaldo, making his first start of the season after returning from the summer World Cup, appeared frustrated as he headed toward the dressing room at half‑time. The 41‑year‑old forward was seen angrily gesturing and removing his captain’s armband while walking down the tunnel.

Second‑half turnaround

Postecoglou then made the bold decision to remove Ronaldo from the squad before the second half, a tactical change that proved inspirational.

Sadio Mane ignited the revival in the 74th minute, finding the net to give Al Nassr hope.

Three minutes later, defender Abdulelah Al Amri levelled the match, restoring parity.

Mane completed the comeback with a decisive goal in the 90th minute, sealing a 3‑2 victory for Al Nassr.

Post‑match fallout

Footage of the celebrations showed no sign of Ronaldo celebrating, while Postecoglou declined to answer questions about his controversial decision, stating, “I think there’s a bigger story today, and that’s that ten men of Al Nassr were unbelievable.”

Controversy has followed Ronaldo since his move to the Middle East in January 2023 after a public fallout with Manchester United. Earlier this year he went on strike over perceived financial disparity with title rivals Al Hilal, who recently signed Karim Benzema. Saudi officials were surprised given his near‑£500,000‑a‑day wage. The Saudi Pro League issued a statement emphasizing club independence, and the report by TARA ANSON-WALSH for FOOTBALL on 26 August 2026 highlighted these tensions.
